FAQ
Materials
Yes, we always use solid hardwoods in all our pieces, which ensures lasting quality, beautifully unique grain figuring and integrity throughout. We love this beautiful natural material, which is an absolute joy to work with and we think this shows in our work.
We also use other accent materials when required- such as metal, glass and textiles.
Provenance of materials is important to us so we always try to use native hardwoods from local timber yards, sawmills, tree surgeons and land owners. This is much more sustainable than importing wood from abroad. It reduces carbon emissions significantly, supports local business and supports the UK timber industry, which encourages better management of diverse native woodlands.
We always try to hand pick each slab and plank of timber to ensure its quality and colour matching. And we love getting out amongst the stacks of material and building a relationship with our suppliers.
Often we know the location of where the tree was felled and why, especially if it is a special old tree. We believe this adds a depth to the story of each piece.
We believe this adds so much more unique, interesting character to each piece and gives insight into the life of the tree and what it endured. It increases the yield of wood that can be used and so reduces waste significantly.
Usually these natural defects are cut out of the wood when making furniture as they are seen as inferior.
Every piece of wood is closely inspected and assessed for its suitability for each project. Natural splits and cracks are stabilised with a combination of resin and dovetail keys that are set deep into the wood. This not only ensures that there will be no further movement or splitting, but adds more contrast and a signature mark of true craftsmanship.quality and can be difficult to work with. By being creative with these features and taking time and great effort to include them adds so much richness, character and soul.
No, we take great care to remove the bark and sand the natural waney edges smooth, to ensure it’s not only practical but beautifully tactile. This takes time and great effort but it so worth it when you see the sensuous flowing curves contrasted with the crisp angular forms of other components parts in the design. Sometimes it is necessary to cut off some particularly curvy areas of the waney edge that protrude out too much to be practical (such as a with a table top). This is done obviously and confidently with an angular cut, which creates contrast and narrative.
Finishes & Care
We use natural environmentally friendly oils such as Osmo oil. They soak deep into the wood, are hard waring and keep the wood looking great. They provide a beautiful lustrous finish with depth yet you can still feel the natural grain details. We really don’t like unnatural glossy looking finishes that don’t let the wood breath and feel like plastic.
We want our piece to be used and not just admired. We believe that every day wear and tear creates a beautiful character and adds a homely warmth. Warm soap water or an Osmo spray cleaner can be used to clean your piece more thoroughly every now and then.
We want your Felled to Form piece to grow old gracefully as part of its ongoing story.
We can advise on how to treat any potential damage, beyond everyday wear and tear.
Production Time
Lead times are typically 6 – 8 weeks, once the design is agreed, depending on scale of the project.
Delivery & Installation
Delivery costs will be advised when placing your order and will be dependent on your location and access.
We will provide you with an estimated delivery date upon your initial enquiry and then follow up with an agreed date when you place your order.
We prefer to deliver in person where possible and are happy to assemble your piece if necessary. We will remove all packaging and make every effort to re-use or recycle our packaging to save on waste. We will always deliver and install any fitted piece you have ordered to ensure the highest quality right the way through to the end.
Our furniture is not flat packed to ensure the best lasting quality that it will last for generations. However for larger pieces such as a dining table it may be necessary to engineer removable legs to ensure ease of access. The assembly process is really simple and rest assured this will not compromise on strength or quality.
If your piece is shipped via courier and requires assembly, you will not need any special tools to assemble it. We will usually provide the tools you will need to assemble it such as a spanner, hex- key or screwdriver- simple!
Pricing & Costs
Bespoke furniture does not always cost more than the high street. When you really enjoy and cherish a beautifully unique piece of furniture that has been designed and made with your individual needs and desires in mind, you are far more likely to hold onto it for a life time- even pass it on to the next generation. The alternative is making do with mass produced and often inferior furniture that is a compromise of you needs and aesthetic- usually resulting in replacing items multiple time over.
We can guide you through all the options to make your piece as extravagant or cost effective as you desire. We have a range of tried and tested, timeless designs that are a great start point to base your piece on- saving time and money. Or you can have something 100% bespoke that is truly unique and personal to you and your space.
